There are moments in nature so extraordinary they feel choreographed. The wildebeest calving on the southern Serengeti plains in February is one of them. Approximately half a million calves born within two weeks — a biological event of extraordinary concentration. And the predators are waiting.
February is the most emotionally powerful month in the Tanzania safari calendar — and an excellent month for Kilimanjaro. The calving season draws wildlife enthusiasts who understand that what they are witnessing is genuinely unrepeatable elsewhere on earth. Combine it with a clear-sky Kilimanjaro climb and you have one of the great African adventures.
February: The Honest Case
Kilimanjaro Safari in February | Ndutu Season
Late February is the peak of the Great Migration calving — the most concentrated wildlife birth event on earth. In a single morning game drive, you may witness multiple births, multiple predator attacks, and the extraordinary survival drama that has played out on these plains for a million years. Lions, hyenas, cheetahs, and leopards are all actively hunting. The southern Serengeti (Ndutu area) has the world's highest concentration of cheetahs during calving season.
Kilimanjaro Safari in February | Ndutu Season
February is one of the best months for mountain conditions. The short dry season (January–February) gives clear skies, firm trails, and excellent visibility. The summit view is among the best of the year — the entire 360-degree panorama is visible, including Mount Meru, the Rift Valley, and the endless sea of acacia below. Night skies at altitude are extraordinary in February — the Milky Way over Kibo is one of the finest celestial views accessible without technical climbing equipment.
Kilimanjaro Safari in February | Ndutu Season
February is summer in Tanzania — warm, clear, and comfortable. Daytime temperatures on safari are 25–32°C. Evening temperatures are mild. This is the most comfortable safari season: not the cold dawn drives of the high-altitude parks in July, not the intense heat of September. February is particularly comfortable for families with children who may find the June–August cold mornings challenging.
Kilimanjaro Safari in February | Ndutu Season
February safari traffic is significantly lower than July through October — the calving season attracts wildlife enthusiasts, not the mass market that books July and August. The Ndutu area is busy with specialist safari operators, but the density of vehicles is a fraction of the migration crossing season. Our February calving-season safaris routinely report hours of exclusive wildlife viewing — time with a cheetah hunt, uninterrupted by other vehicles.
Safari in February: Where to Focus
500,000 wildebeest births in 2 weeks, highest cheetah density on earth, exceptional lion and hyena action
3–4 days — the centrepiece of any February safari
Ndutu is a seasonal conservation area — camps are mobile and operate January through March only. The camp locations shift based on where the wildebeest herds are concentrated.
Large lion prides, resident leopards, excellent general game viewing
1–2 days
February central Serengeti offers excellent wildlife viewing without the vehicle density of the Ndutu calving grounds — a good complement to 3–4 days at Ndutu.
Black rhino, buffalo herds, elephant, flamingo on the salt lake — the Crater is reliable in any month
1 day essential
February Ngorongoro is underrated — fewer vehicles than peak season, green crater floor, excellent photography conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is February a good month for a Kilimanjaro and safari combo?
February is one of Tanzania's most spectacular months — and an outstanding choice for a combo trip. The wildebeest calving season reaches its peak in the southern Serengeti: approximately 500,000 calves are born within a two-week window, and the predator action that follows is exceptional — lions, hyenas, cheetahs, and leopards are all actively hunting the vulnerable newborns. February is also one of the best months for Kilimanjaro: dry season conditions return, clear skies are the norm, and the mountain is far less crowded than June through October. The combination of world-class safari and excellent mountain conditions makes February one of our most recommended combo months.
What is Kilimanjaro like in February?
February is an excellent Kilimanjaro month — one of the best of the year. The long rains have not yet begun (they typically start in March or April), and the short dry season (January–February) gives the mountain clear skies, firm trails, and optimal climbing conditions. Days are warm (15–25°C at base), nights are cold at altitude (-5 to -10°C near the summit). The summit view in February is often exceptional — clear horizons for hundreds of kilometres, the Rift Valley visible to the west, Mount Meru to the south. February is significantly less crowded than the peak months of July through October, and the pricing reflects this.
What is the Great Migration calving season?
The Great Migration is the largest movement of land animals on earth — approximately 1.5 million wildebeest, plus zebra and gazelle, moving in a continuous clockwise loop through the Serengeti-Masai Mara ecosystem. The calving season is the most emotionally compelling phase: 500,000 wildebeest cows give birth within a concentrated two-week window in the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti (Ndutu area). The concentration of vulnerable newborns attracts Africa's greatest predator density. Lions, hyenas, cheetahs, and leopards hunt actively in and around the calving herds. Watching a cheetah sprint across the plain to intercept a newborn — or a lion pride positioned at a waterhole as wildebeest gather to drink — is the most visceral wildlife experience Africa offers.
How much does a February Kilimanjaro and safari combo cost?
February is a premium month within the January–March calving season, but still 15–25% below peak-season (July–October) pricing. A 10-day Machame + Northern Circuit safari combo starts from approximately $3,744 per person. A Lemosho 8-day climb + 5-day calving-season safari starts from $4,264 per person. Accommodation pricing in February reflects its wildlife prestige — luxury camps in the Ndutu area charge peak-season rates, while mid-range options offer good value. The calving season's timing means early booking is essential for the best camps.
Is February safe for Kilimanjaro with the long rains approaching?
February Kilimanjaro conditions are excellent — the long rains typically do not arrive until mid-March at the earliest, and in most years not until April. February is the second month of a short dry season that begins in January, and the mountain's trails, water sources, and conditions are at their best for the year. There is no meaningful rain risk in February. Any concern about the long rains is misplaced for February travel — this is one of the most reliable months on the mountain. Route conditions are optimal, visibility is excellent, and the summit success rates reflect this.
