Wildebeest crossing the Mara River in the northern Serengeti during the Great Migration

Complete Guide

Kilimanjaro +
Serengeti Combo

Summit Africa's highest peak, then witness the Great Migration in the Serengeti. One operator handles both — seamlessly.

Two experiences. One trip. Zero compromises.

A Kilimanjaro + Serengeti combo is the definitive Tanzania journey. There is the mountain — 5,895m of volcanic crater, glacier, and thin air — and then there is the Serengeti, where the largest mammal migration on earth plays out across a golden savanna. Climbed by 50,000 people a year. Witnessed by safari travellers from every corner of the globe. But doing both with a single operator, from one Arusha base, with coordinated logistics and a guide who knows your name — that is what we do.

This guide covers everything: which routes pair best with a Serengeti safari, when to time the Great Migration, how the logistics work, and what to budget. No broker. No handoff. One operator from the moment you land at Kilimanjaro Airport to the day you depart.

Why Combine

The best of Tanzania — summit and safari

One Operator, Zero Handoffs

Most climbers who add a safari end up coordinating with two different companies — the Kili operator and a separate safari company. We run both. Your Arusha briefing covers the full itinerary. Your ground transport is无缝. Your post-summit safari guide is already expecting you.

Summit High, Then Safari Ease

After Kilimanjaro, your body will appreciate a gentler pace. A safari in a Land Cruiser is physically undemanding — you sit, you watch, you photograph. The contrast with the mountain is exactly what a post-climb body needs: warm lowlands, wildlife, and no altitude.

Same Trip, Twice the Story

Kilimanjaro gives you the summit — one of the world's great wilderness moments. The Serengeti gives you the greatest wildlife show on earth. Together, they make a Tanzania trip that cannot be replicated anywhere else on the planet.

Logical Logistics

The mountain and the Serengeti are 4–5 hours apart by road. Your post-climb transfer goes directly from Arusha to the Serengeti via Ngorongoro — or you fly from Arusha to Seronera in 45 minutes. No backtracking, no separate bookings.

The Safari

Serengeti by season — when to time your combo

January–March

Southern Serengeti — Calving Season

Pro tip: Wildebeest calving in the short grass plains south of Ndutu. Predator action is extraordinary — lions, cheetah, and hyena are never far from the herds.

Migration status: Herds in southern and central Serengeti

April–May

Green Season Safari

Pro tip: Fewer visitors, lower prices, exceptional birding. The long rains bring fresh green landscapes and dramatic afternoon thunderstorms. Photography is spectacular.

Migration status: Northward migration begins — herds moving through central Serengeti

June–September

Northern Serengeti — River Crossings

Pro tip: The Great Migration at its most dramatic. Daily Mara River crossings. Lamai and the northern tip offer the most exclusive wildlife viewing — restricted vehicle numbers and off-road driving in private conservancies.

Migration status: Herds in northern Serengeti and Lamai Triangle

October–December

Short Rains Safari

Pro tip: The 'emerald season' — landscapes transform to vivid green, newborn wildebeest run with the herds, and the first Migration herds return south. Exceptional photography, fewer tourists, great value.

Questions

Kilimanjaro + Serengeti FAQ

Can I climb Kilimanjaro and do a safari on the same trip?

Yes — and it is the most common itinerary for Tanzania visitors. Most travellers spend 7–10 days on the mountain, return to Arusha for a rest night, then transfer to the Serengeti for 3–5 days of safari. The logistics are straightforward when one operator handles both. Allow 12–16 days total for a comfortable pace.

Should I do the safari before or after climbing Kilimanjaro?

After — almost universally. Climbing Kilimanjaro is physically demanding and altitude puts stress on the body even for the fittest travellers. A safari after the climb is exactly what the body needs: warm, low-altitude wildlife viewing from a comfortable Land Cruiser seat. You will also be in the best shape of your life, which makes the game drives more energising rather than exhausting.

What is the best time of year for a Kilimanjaro + Serengeti combo?

June–October is the optimal window. Kilimanjaro is in the dry season — no rain, clear skies, excellent trail conditions. In the Serengeti, the Great Migration herds are in the northern reaches, with daily river crossings from July through September. January–March is equally excellent for combining the summit with the calving season in the southern Serengeti.

How much does a Kilimanjaro + Serengeti combo cost?

A 12-day Kilimanjaro + Serengeti combo starts from $4,992 per person for a 7-day Machame climb plus a 4-day northern circuit safari. This includes park fees, all accommodation, meals on the mountain, a private safari guide, and all ground transfers. Peak season (July–August and December–January) commands a premium. Luxury lodge upgrades add $832–$2,080 per person.

How do I get from Kilimanjaro to the Serengeti?

By road: 4–5 hours from Arusha via the Great Rift Valley, passing through Karatu and the Ngorongoro gate. This drive is scenic and gives you a first wildlife sighting in Ngorongoro on the way. By air: a 45-minute scheduled flight from Arusha Airport to Seronera Airstrip — book this through us and we handle the logistics. The road option is included in standard packages; the flight upgrade costs $187–$291 per person.

Which Kilimanjaro route pairs best with a Serengeti safari?

The Machame Route (7 days) pairs best with a 3–4 day safari — efficient, popular, and well-understood by operators. The Lemosho Route (8 days) is our top recommendation if your schedule allows: it has the highest summit success rate (90–95%) and the extra day makes a real difference above 4,000m. The Northern Circuit pairs naturally with a longer safari (5–7 days) since you are already investing 9 days on the mountain.
