Why Marangu
Why the Marangu Route is Tanzania's most established Kilimanjaro climb
Marangu is the original Kilimanjaro climbing route โ established in the early days of Tanzanian tourism, well before the tented camps and longer itineraries of modern operators. It is nicknamed the Coca-Cola Route for a reason: it is the most recognisable, most booked, and most commercialised path on the mountain. You will not have the mountain to yourself, but you will have the most developed infrastructure and the only permanent accommodation.
The primary reason climbers choose Marangu is the hut accommodation โ no tent to carry, no camp setup, and a real bed at altitude. The 5-day itinerary is the shortest on Kili, which also makes it the most affordable. The 6-day version adds a genuine acclimatisation day at Horombo that meaningfully improves summit probability.
Only route with permanent hut accommodation โ no tent required
Most established and well-marked trail on Kilimanjaro
Shortest standard itinerary โ most affordable Kili option
5-day or 6-day options โ choose based on your fitness level
Slightly gentler gradients on summit day than Machame (via Gilman's Point)
No camping gear to manage โ lighter personal pack weight

Ngorongoro Crater โ included in every Marangu combo, one of Africa's finest safari experiences.
The 5-day Marangu climb โ day by day
Marangu is the shortest standard Kili itinerary. The 5-day version is genuinely demanding โ the continuous ascent without a proper acclimatisation day is the route's main weakness. The 6-day version, which adds an extra night at Horombo, is the better choice for anyone serious about summiting.
Day 1 โ Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Arusha to Marangu Gate (1,800m). The climb begins through cultivated farmland before entering the rainforest zone. The path is well-maintained and...

Day 2 โ Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Day 3 โ Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
The terrain becomes barren alpine desert. There is no water source between Horombo and Kibo โ all water for the night must be carried up. Kibo Hut...

Day 4 โ Summit Night and Descent
Departure between 23:00 and 01:00. The climb to Gilman's Point (5,685m) on the rim of Kibo crater takes 6-8 hours. From Gilman's Point, it is a further 1-2 hours along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Marangu's advantage here: you have been sleeping at the same altitude for two nights (Horombo and Kibo), so there is no additional acclimatisation penalty on summit night. The descent from the summit back to Horombo Hut is long.

The Safari
The safari โ Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater
After the summit, Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro make an ideal recovery itinerary. Manyara at lower altitude feels almost tropical after the cold of Kili. Ngorongoro Crater delivers the high-density wildlife experience that is the reward for your climb.
Day 6โ7 โ Lake Manyara National Park
Lake Manyara sits in the Great Rift Valley โ a shallow alkaline lake famous for its tree-climbing lions, enormous elephant families, and massive fl...
Tree-climbing lions in the acacia canopy โ a behaviour unique to Lake Manyara's lion population.
Day 8 โ Ngorongoro Crater
One full day in the world's largest intact volcanic caldera. Ngorongoro has the highest wildlife density in Tanzania โ lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, hippo, flamingos, and the endangered black rhino are all common. The crater floor is compact enough to see a huge variety in a single game drive, making it an ideal finale to the combo.

Tarangire National Park โ available as an add-on for the 6-day Marangu combo.

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Coca-Cola route mean?
Marangu is nicknamed the Coca-Cola Route because it is the oldest, most established, and most commercialised path up Kilimanjaro โ much like a globally recognised brand. It is the only route with permanent hut accommodation rather than tents, and it was the original tourist route on the mountain. The nickname is partly affectionate and partly a warning that you will not be alone on this path. In terms of character, Marangu is efficient, accessible, and well-supported โ but it has a steeper ascent profile and a lower summit rate than Lemosho or Machame.
Is Marangu easier because you sleep in huts instead of tents?
The hut accommodation is more comfortable than tent camping โ there are actual beds, you can stand up inside, and you are protected from the wind and rain. However, the huts do not make the climb itself easier. Marangu's ascent profile โ climbing from 1,800m to 3,720m in two days without the sleep-low variation that helps acclimatisation โ is its actual challenge. The steepest gradient on Marangu is actually steeper than Machame on a per-day basis. The huts are a real comfort advantage; the route profile is not.
Why does Marangu have a lower summit rate than other routes?
Marangu's lower summit rate (~65% for 5-day, ~78% for 6-day) is primarily a consequence of its continuous ascent profile. Unlike Lemosho or Machame, which include dedicated acclimatisation days where you climb high and sleep low, Marangu climbs continuously without this recovery variation. By the time climbers reach Kibo Hut at 4,750m, many are already experiencing altitude symptoms. The 6-day Marangu addresses this somewhat with an extra night at Horombo, but it still does not match the acclimatisation quality of Lemosho's 8-day itinerary.
Do I need to carry a tent on Marangu?
No โ this is one of Marangu's practical advantages. The permanent hut accommodation means no tent to carry, no sleeping pad to worry about, and no setup at camp. Your porters still carry your duffel bag and group equipment, but you do not need to manage tent poles or stakes. The pack weight is lighter than any tented route. For those who are not confident with camping gear, this is a genuine benefit.
Can I add the Serengeti to the Marangu combo?
Yes โ the 6-day Marangu + Northern Circuit option can be extended to include the Serengeti for an additional $291โ$364 per person (park fees and vehicle). The drive from Ngorongoro to the Serengeti is 2โ3 hours. Message us on WhatsApp before booking if you want to add the Serengeti โ we will adjust the itinerary accordingly.
What is the total price for the Marangu + Safari combo?
The 8-day Marangu + Lake Manyara & Ngorongoro combo starts at $2,496 per person. The 10-day Extended Marangu + Northern Circuit (adding Tarangire) starts at $3,224 per person. Both include all park fees, hut accommodation, meals, private Land Cruiser, and all transfers. Marangu is the most affordable of the main Kili routes. Solo traveller pricing is available on request.
