Hot air balloon floating over the Serengeti at sunrise with wildebeest migration in the distance

The Ultimate Tanzania Add-On

Hot Air Balloon Safari Over the Serengeti

After the summit of Kilimanjaro, rise above the Serengeti at sunrise. One hour over East Africa's most iconic wildlife landscape โ€” then breakfast in the bush. The perfect complement to your climb.

Why Add a Balloon Safari to Your Kilimanjaro Climb?

You have already done something extraordinary โ€” stood on the roof of Africa. Now imagine floating silently over the Serengeti as the sun breaks over the horizon, watching thousands of animals move across the plain below. A balloon safari is not just an add-on; it is the exclamation point on your Tanzania adventure.

Sunrise Over the Serengeti

Balloons fly in the first hour after sunrise when the air is coolest and wildlife is most active. The light is extraordinary โ€” golden hour across the savanna, shadows stretching across the grass, mist rising from the river.

Aerial Perspective

No game drive, no guided walk, nothing else gives you this view. Herds of wildebeest look like rivers of dark muscle through the grass. Lions on kills become contextually clear. Hippos in pools cast circular shadows.

Champagne Bush Breakfast

After landing, the balloon crew sets up a full breakfast in the bush โ€” tables, chairs, continental and hot options, and a champagne toast to your Kili summit. It is one of the great dining experiences in Africa.

What to Expect

Your Balloon Safari Morning

1

Pre-dawn Pickup

Your safari guide collects you from your Serengeti lodge between 5:30โ€“6:00am. A short game drive in the dark gets you to the balloon launch site near Seronera.

2

Launch at Sunrise

Watch the crew inflate the balloon โ€” it is an experience in itself. Climb into the basket as the first light hits the Serengeti plains. The pilot releases the ropes and you lift off into the sunrise.

3

One Hour Over the Plains

Float silently over the savanna for approximately one hour. The pilot uses different wind layers to navigate โ€” sometimes skimming low over the grass, sometimes rising for a panoramic view. Wildlife reacts to the shadow and movement far below.

4

Landing and Bush Breakfast

The pilot brings the balloon in for a gentle landing in a cleared area. The ground crew has arrived with a full setup โ€” tables, chairs, a hot breakfast, pastries, fruit, juices, and a champagne toast to celebrate your Kilimanjaro summit.

Balloon Safari: Practical Information

What to Wear

Dress in layers โ€” it is cold at 6am (10โ€“15ยฐC) and warms quickly. Closed shoes required (no sandals). Wear neutral colours. The basket is open-sided; wind comes through at altitude.

Fitness Requirements

No physical fitness requirement โ€” the basket is stationary during flight. You must be able to climb into and out of the basket (two steps up). If you have mobility concerns, let us know in advance โ€” special arrangements can sometimes be made.

Booking and Confirmation

Balloon safari must be booked at least 7 days in advance as spaces are limited to 16 passengers per basket. We confirm availability when you build your combo package. The balloon operator requires your full name, nationality, and weight at time of booking.

Weather Cancellation Policy

If the pilot cancels due to unsafe conditions (high winds, rain, fog), you receive a full balloon refund. We always plan an alternative game drive activity for the same morning so your safari day is not lost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do a balloon safari after climbing Kilimanjaro?

Yes โ€” and it is one of the most rewarding combinations in Tanzania. The balloon safari typically departs at 6am from the Seronera area of the Serengeti, so you would need to be at your safari camp by then. Most clients who combine Kili with a balloon safari stay at a Serengeti lodge the night before, which works perfectly after the descent. We build this into every Kili+Safari combo itinerary automatically.

How much does a hot air balloon safari cost in Tanzania?

Balloon safaris in Tanzania cost $520โ€“$624 per person for a 1-hour flight over the Serengeti, including a champagne breakfast in the bush afterward. This is a separate add-on to your safari โ€” park fees, accommodation, and guiding are billed separately. When combined with a Kilimanjaro climb, we offer balloon as an optional extension rather than bundling it into the base price.

Is a balloon safari safe after altitude illness?

Balloon flights operate at low altitude โ€” you float 100โ€“300 metres above the savanna, well below the altitude where Kilimanjaro summit illness occurs. The experience is calm and stationary-feeling during flight, with no physical exertion required. The main consideration is timing: if you are still experiencing altitude effects on the descent day, we recommend waiting until your second safari day for the balloon flight to ensure full recovery.

What wildlife can I see from a balloon over the Serengeti?

From the balloon you see the Serengeti ecosystem in a way impossible from a vehicle โ€” migrating wildebeest herds from above, elephants moving through treelines, hippos in rivers, crocodiles on sandbanks, and predators on kills. The pilot cannot steer the balloon but works with wind currents to position over active wildlife. Sunrise balloon flights over the Serengeti are considered one of the most magical wildlife experiences on Earth.

What is the weight limit for a hot air balloon safari?

Most Tanzania balloon operators have a weight limit of 100โ€“120kg per person and a combined weight limit per basket. There is no minimum weight but young children (under 1.2m tall) may not be accepted for safety reasons. Clients who are over 100kg may be required to pay for two spaces to ensure the basket remains balanced. We confirm all details at the time of booking.

How do I book a balloon safari with my Kilimanjaro climb?

Add balloon safari as an optional add-on when you build your Kili+Safari combo. We arrange the balloon flight through our Serengeti operating partners โ€” the same team that handles your game drives. There is no separate operator to coordinate; we handle all logistics so the balloon booking is seamless once you are in the Serengeti. Tell us your climb dates and we will schedule the balloon for your first or second safari morning.

What happens if the balloon is cancelled due to weather?

Balloon flights are weather-dependent โ€” high winds or heavy rain mean no flight. If cancelled, you receive a full refund from the balloon operator (typically processed within 5 business days). We always schedule a game drive backup activity for the same morning so your safari day is not lost. In the rare case of cancellation, we re-book for the following morning if conditions improve.

How does balloon safari compare to a game drive for wildlife viewing?

A game drive covers more ground and gives you the ability to track specific animals, listen to your guide's detailed interpretation, and stop whenever something interesting happens. A balloon safari offers a unique aerial perspective and the iconic experience of sunrise over the Serengeti โ€” but you cannot control where you go. Most clients do both: the balloon for the once-in-a-lifetime experience, and game drives for comprehensive wildlife viewing and photography.
