L

Lemosho Route โ€” the case for going longer

Lemosho is the route we recommend to first-time climbers, anyone who has not spent significant time above 3,000m, and anyone whose primary goal is reaching the summit. The 8-day itinerary is not a luxury โ€” it is a physiological investment in the best possible outcome.

The route approaches from the west through the Shira Plateau โ€” the most remote and least crowded part of the climb. You see the mountain differently because you approach it from a direction most climbers never take. The extra Shira Plateau rest day on Day 3 is the clearest single reason for Lemosho's superior summit rate.

M

Machame Route โ€” when shorter makes sense

Machame is the right choice when your vacation time is genuinely fixed at 7 days and you understand the trade-off. A 7-day Machame is a solid itinerary โ€” the summit rate is meaningfully lower than Lemosho, but still 80โ€“85% with an experienced operator. A compressed 6-day Machame is a different proposition: the altitude gain is aggressive and the summit rate drops accordingly.

The Machame Route is steeper and more physically demanding on individual days than Lemosho. The Barranco Wall on Day 5 is the same on both routes. The scenery is different โ€” Machame goes through dense rainforest early and has dramatic views from the southern circuit โ€” but it is equally spectacular in different ways.

The Verdict

Choose Lemosho if you are serious about summiting.

If this is your first time on Kilimanjaro โ€” or your first time above 4,000m โ€” Lemosho is the right call. The summit is not guaranteed on any route, but Lemosho gives you the best possible physiological conditions. The extra two days are not wasted time; they are the reason you stand at Uhuru Peak.

Choose Machame if you have real altitude experience, genuinely cannot take more than 7 days, and accept the slightly lower summit rate. A 7-day Machame with an experienced operator and a well-matched group is still an excellent Kilimanjaro experience.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Which route has the higher summit success rate โ€” Lemosho or Machame?

Lemosho has a significantly higher summit success rate โ€” 92โ€“96% compared to Machame's 80โ€“85% on a 7-day itinerary and 65โ€“75% on a compressed 6-day Machame. The primary reason is time on the mountain: Lemosho's 8-day itinerary includes a full rest day on the Shira Plateau (Day 3), which is the single most effective acclimatisation tool on Kilimanjaro. Machame's 6-day version cuts this day entirely, forcing faster altitude gains that genuinely increase altitude sickness risk.

Is Lemosho harder than Machame because it is longer?

Not in any meaningful way. Lemosho's extra days are not extra-hard days โ€” they are gentler walking days with better acclimatisation built in. The physical difficulty of individual days is broadly similar between the two routes, except that on Machame's compressed 6-day version, some days are longer and steeper because there is less time to spread the ascent. The Barranco Wall, which is the most technically demanding section, appears on both routes at roughly the same point in the itinerary.

Why is Machame more popular if Lemosho has a better summit rate?

Machame is more popular primarily because it is less expensive and fits into shorter vacation windows. The 6-day Machame is the cheapest option on Kilimanjaro, and it is often marketed aggressively by international booking platforms that do not emphasise the summit rate difference. Lemosho's longer itinerary requires more crew days, which increases cost. For climbers booking independently or through brokers, price often dominates the decision. For us, we always recommend Lemosho because we have seen the difference in outcomes.

Can I add a safari to both routes?

Yes. Both Lemosho and Machame combine well with a safari after the climb. Our Lemosho + Northern Circuit safari (11 days total) uses the 8-day Lemosho climb followed by Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater. Our Machame + Ngorongoro safari (9 days total) uses the 7-day Machame climb followed by a 2-day crater experience. Both itineraries are designed around climb-first, safari-after โ€” the ideal sequencing.

Which route is better for someone with hiking experience but no altitude experience?

Lemosho is the better choice. Altitude sickness is the primary risk on Kilimanjaro โ€” not technical difficulty โ€” and it affects experienced and inexperienced hikers equally. What matters is not your hiking background but the rate of ascent. Lemosho's 8-day profile gives your body the best possible physiological conditions regardless of your fitness level. We have guided climbers aged 18 to 72 on Lemosho, and the extra days are what make that possible.

What does Lemosho cost that Machame does not?

The main cost difference comes from two extra days on the mountain: more park fees (2 additional days at Kilimanjaro National Park), two extra nights of camping, and two more days of meals and crew. This typically adds $312โ€“$520 to the total operator cost. Some budget operators cut corners on the 6-day Machame by using larger group sizes, fewer assistant guides, or lower-quality equipment โ€” we do not. Our 7-day Machame is comparable in comfort to our Lemosho; the difference is purely the extra mountain days.
