When to Climb Kilimanjaro and Do a Safari

The complete month-by-month guide to the Kilimanjaro and Tanzania safari combo β€” weather, wildlife, crowds, and costs.

The Mountain and the Bush β€” Same Trip, Different Seasons

One of the most common questions we are asked: when is the best time to combine a Kilimanjaro climb with a Tanzania safari? The honest answer is that it depends on what matters most to you β€” the wildlife you want to see, your budget, how many other people you are comfortable sharing the parks with, and how you feel about cold nights on the mountain.

The good news is that the mountain and the safari are close enough to combine in any month of the year. The sequencing is always the same: climb first, recover in Arusha for one night, then safari. What changes is the experience on both ends.

This guide breaks down every month so you can make the decision based on your priorities β€” not on generic advice that does not account for what you actually care about.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to combine a Kilimanjaro climb with a safari?+
September is the single best month for the combo β€” the Kilimanjaro routes are dry, the safari parks are excellent after the rains, and the Great Migration is at its peak in the Northern Serengeti. October is very close behind. That said, the best month depends on your priorities: January and February are superb for game viewing and warm weather on the mountain; July and August are peak everything; April and May offer the lowest prices and empty parks.
Is Kilimanjaro climb safe during the rainy season?+
The rainy season (April and May) does make the Kilimanjaro routes muddier and more slippery, particularly on the Lemosho and Shira routes. The Rongai route is the driest during this period. Summit success rates are generally lower in the wet season because trails are more difficult and the mountain is less frequently attempted. We do not recommend the rainy season for first-time climbers. November is a small rainy season β€” shorter and less intense than April-May β€” and the mountain is quieter.
When is the cheapest time for a Kilimanjaro and safari combo?+
April and May are the cheapest months β€” lodge and camp rates drop significantly, some operators offer discounts, and the park fees for April are reduced. The tradeoff is that some roads in the safari parks can be difficult after the long rains, and the wildlife is more dispersed. May in particular is a quiet month with excellent value. If your budget is the primary constraint, April or May will get you the most trip for your money.
What is the best time to see the Great Migration on a combined trip?+
The Great Migration β€” two million wildebeest moving through the Serengeti and Mara β€” is present in the Northern Serengeti and into the Masai Mara from July through October, with the peak river crossings in August and September. If seeing the Migration is a priority, plan your safari for July through October. The climb can happen any time of year β€” the Migration does not affect the mountain.
Can I do the Kilimanjaro climb and safari in the same month?+
Yes β€” the mountain and safari are close enough to combine in any month. After your climb, you will return to Arusha, spend a night recovering, and then depart for safari. The typical sequence is: climb first (6-8 days), one night in Arusha, then safari (3-5 days). This works year-round. The only timing consideration is that after a demanding climb, you want to be fresh for the wildlife viewing β€” so we always plan the safari after the mountain, not before.
What is the coldest month on Kilimanjaro?+
July and August are the coldest months on Kilimanjaro β€” temperatures at summit can reach -15Β°C to -25Β°C at night, and wind chill can make it feel even colder. December through February are also cold but slightly warmer. Warm layers and proper summit gear are essential regardless of month, but particularly from June through September.
